About us
Two people who got tired of chasing invoices
Tallyroot started in 2023 at a shared desk in Portland, Oregon. Maya had been freelancing as a designer for eight years; Tom built billing systems for a payments company. Between them they had written a lot of "just checking in on this invoice" emails.
Maya's spreadsheet of who owed her what had three tabs and a colour code. Tom's first version of Tallyroot was a script that read that spreadsheet and sent the reminders she kept putting off. Within a month, two friends asked for a copy. Within a year, it was a product.
We still run Tallyroot the way we'd want our own studio to be run: small, careful with money and close to the people who use it. We're independent and profitable, and we plan to stay that way.
How we work
Built for one or two
Every feature is judged by whether a solo freelancer would use it this week. If it needs a finance team, we don't build it.
A person answers
Support is answered by the people who build Tallyroot, from Portland, within one working day.
Your money is yours
Payments go straight from your client to your bank through Stripe. We never hold your funds.
